Late这个字经常出现，很奇怪，这么简单的字，居然也是英文出错率最高的字之一。
先来整理之前提过和late相关的几个错误，帮大家加深印象：
1. 我昨晚很晚才睡。
错误：I slept late last night. (slept late是睡到很晚起)
正确：I went to bed late last night. / I was late going to bed last night.
2. 我会晚５分钟。
错误：I will be late for 5 minutes.
正确：I will be 5 minutes late.
3. 今天早上他来办公室来得很迟。
错误：He late to come to the office this morning.
正确：He was coming in late to the office this morning
今天我们要看的是late更高阶一点的错误。
1. “I am late.”单独讲感觉有内情。
常看英美剧的人应该不会陌生，当女生和男生说：I am late. 其实就是指经期晚了，亦即「怀孕了」。
和朋友相约如果迟到时，我们会说Sorry, I am late. I overslept. 意思是「对不起，迟到了，我睡过头了」，因为前面有加一个Sorry就不会造成误解。
2. Late和lately不是形容词和副词的关系
这两个字长得很像，很多人以为late是形容词，加上ly和late就是它的副词。其实不是。 Late本身可以当形容词或副词，像这句：
I arrived late to the office. 我晚到办公室。 late就是副词，修饰动词arrived。
Late是「晚」，而lately是「最近」。再比较这两句：
I had my first book published lately. 我的第一本书最近刚出版。
I had my first book published late. 我的第一本书很迟才出版。
3. 晚婚是get married later in life还是get married late in life？
说到晚婚，英文我们会用late这个字的比较级later。
Getting married later in life is a modern trend. 晚婚已经变成现代趋势。
很多人会问为什么要用later而不用late就好了，如果用late，会有一点主观色彩，可能觉得晚婚不好或不得已，而later则有这种「晚一点」是个人的选择。来看这两句：
You are late to get married. 你这是太晚才结婚。 （感觉好像晚婚不好）
I choose to get married later in life. 我选择晚一点再结婚。
